VERBUND is one of Europe’s most environmentally friendly producers of electricity
We started introducing environmental management systems in our power plants more than 20 years ago. These are continually being expanded to include new VERBUND plants and are audited and certified annually by external experts. Nearly 100% of our electricity generation is produced from climate-friendly, renewable hydropower from VERBUND AG’s 131 hydropower plants. Each year, more than 30 terawatt hours of electricity are generated in total in VERBUND power plants from the renewable energy sources of hydro, wind and solar power.
In the future, one quarter of VERBUND’s total electricity will also be generated from photovoltaics and other wind farms. With electricity generation from renewable energy sources, we are resolutely continuing on our path towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The generation facilities are continuously maintained and modernised, both in terms of efficiency increases and greening. In order to safeguard or improve the biodiversity of animals and plants, VERBUND invests in environmental protection and ecological measures, such as the construction of fish passes to provide barrier-free access for fish in power plant areas.
